World premiere – Concerto for orchestra by Thierry Escaich

On Wednesday 14 January 2015, the new Concerto for Symphonic Orchestra by Thierry Escaich was premiered at the opening gala of the Philharmonie de Paris. This new piece, performed by the Orchestre de Paris and directed by Paavo Järvi, was specially commissionned for the occasion by the Philharmonie de Paris and the Orchestre de Paris. The Orchestre de Paris has frequently collaborated with Thierry Escaich, most recently performing Saint-Saëns Symphony No.3 ‘Organ’ with Escaich at the BBC Proms, Paris Salle Pleyel and on tour in Japan in 2013.
Composer, organist and improviser Thierry Escaich is a unique figure in contemporary music and a leading representative of the new generation of French composers. Escaich has composed in many genres and forms, always exploring new sound horizons. His catalogue numbers around 100 works, drawing from the French line of composition of Ravel, Messiaen and Dutilleux, and imbued with references from contemporary, folk and spiritual music. Escaich has been Composer-in-Residence with the Orchestre National de Lyon, Orchestre National de Lille and the Paris Chamber Orchestra and his music has been honoured by three ‘Victoires de la Musique’ awards (2003, 2006 and 2011).
