Conductor Paavo Järvi, a native of Estonia, turned 50 December 30 and the whole country celebrated with him.
He was named Musician of the Year by Estonian Public Broadcasting, led the Estonian National Orchestra in Pärnu on his birthday and in the capital city Tallinn January 1 in a special New Year’s concert webcast live to the world. Estonia’s public radio station Klaasikaraadio profiled him on air, and there was special programming of his concerts for several days throughout the country.
Järvi, music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra from 2001-2011 and now music director laureate, owes allegiance to several orchestras now. He is music director of the Orchestre de Paris and the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra, artistic director of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen (German Chamber Orchestra) and come 2015, he will be chief conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo.
Järvi returns to Cincinnati this month to conduct for the first time since May, 2011. Concerts are 7:30 p.m. Jan. 10 and 8 p.m. Jan. 12 at Music Hall. The program includes the “Overture to Genoveva” by Robert Schumann, the Piano Concerto by Witold Lutoslawski, featuring pianist Stewart Goodyear, and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2. Tickets, beginning at $10, are available at (513) 381-3300 and online at www.cincinnatisymphony.org.
In addition, Järvi will lead the CSO in a community concert at Hamilton High School Jan. 11. The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium, which is located at 1165 Eaton Ave. in Hamilton. CSO associate conductor Robert Trevino will open the concert with a selection by the Hamilton High School Symphony Orchestra, to be followed by Järvi and the CSO in the Schumann and Brahms (Goodyear will not perform). Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for students. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the instrumental music program at Hamilton High School.
