The Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich marks a high-level start to the 2024/25 BCN Clàssics season. Conducted by maestro Paavo Järvi, they performed Mahler's ‘Seventh Symphony’ to great acclaim in Barcelona. The violinist Lisa Batiashvili, the great guest of the evening, paid tribute to Prokofiev to a standing ovation from the audience.
BCN Clàssics has inaugurated its 9th season for the academic year 2024/25 with one of the most outstanding European orchestras of today, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, under the baton of its conductor, Paavo Järvi. The audience present on Monday 28 October at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona was also able to enjoy a high-level guest, the violinist Lisa Batiashvili, who had not visited the city of Barcelona for 14 years. A night in which two of her own names were heard: Sergey Prokofiev and Gustav Mahler.
The audience welcomed the orchestra with a standing ovation, which was heightened by the entrance of the Estonian conductor and the German violinist. Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2 dominated the first part of the evening with its expressive Andante and the impressive Allegro ben marcato at the end. A very applauded piece, especially for Batiashvili, who showed why she is one of the most sought-after violinists today.
The second part was the moment for Mahler's monumental Seventh Symphony. The rapport between the orchestra and the conductor, at the helm since 2019, was evident from the very first minutes of the work. Together they demonstrated impeccable solidity in an enjoyable performance lasting more than an hour, which ended with a large part of the audience on their feet.
