Paavo in Chi-Town
Well, The Maestro must have arrived in the Windy City with quite a bang if these storm reports are to be believed! ;-) Paavo is guest conducting that other CSO -- the Chicago Symphony Orchestra -- this Thursday, October 5, Friday, October 6, and Saturday, October 7 at 8 pm in Symphony Hall.
Acclaimed baritone Matthias Goerne stars in Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn, a beautiful collection of German folk songs. Also on the program is Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony, penned in 1953 following the death of Joseph Stalin, an intensely personal and defiant work with moments of both utter desolation and outright optimism.
By the way, I love the way the Chicago Symphony's website does what I always try to do: encourage listeners to read the Program Notes before you go!
Written by Chicago Symphony Program Annotator Phillip Huscher, program comments are accessible, interesting, and full of information about the works being performed as well as the history and personalities behind the music.
