PAAVO JÄRVI / DEUTSCHE KAMMERPHILHARMONIE BREMEN
HAYDN LONDON SYMPHONIES Nos. 93 & 104
REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS MAY 2023
zementiert, sondern lediglich genau gezeichnet wirkte.”
“Haydn's Symphony No. 93 opened the evening, the 104th closed it: complete perfection of
form, but with nothing hollow about it ... Järvi and the orchestra approached the music in such a
subtle way that the sharply defined form was not forced, but merely precisely drawn. “
Frankfurter Rundschau, Judith von Sternburg, 10 May 2023
“Paavo Järvi led the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen with great joy and passion. He
fabulously emphasised the dance elements. Time and again, mischievousness flashed from his
eyes ... The orchestra and Paavo Järvi masterfully understood how to work out the many contrasts
in the music and build up a captivating tension. The slow passages were performed with
sensitivity and intensity, while the fast and virtuosic passages were executed with playful ease and
the greatest precision.

Famos.”
"There are two dangers lurking in Haydn's symphonic work: not taking it seriously enough. Or
too seriously. Järvi and the Kammerphilharmonie are never threatened by this. It has verve and
elasticity, strikes a romantic note in the Andante (Symphony No. 104) does not avoid the
grotesque in the Menuetto, and unites folksiness and central pathos in the finale. Splendid. “
Rainer Wagner, Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung, 9 May 2023
“Detailed work but an atmosphere of easy, fluid communication, in a relationship that more
than one orchestra and conductor would envy ... it is difficult not to feel enveloped in the tide
of vitality, of joy of the spirit that these musicians of the DKAM transmit. You see and hear them
enjoying themselves, and Järvi, always with a smile on his face, with them.”
"Järvi's interpretation did not iron out any edges, in fact he emphasized the search for surprise,
the contrast, the richness of accents, making the most of the silences, the vivacity of impulse in
the rhythmic drawing and, finally, that general atmosphere of contagious vitality that derives
from it all.”
Scherzo, Rafael Ortega Basagoiti, 9 May 2023
“ ... these were exultant, richly grained readings, throatily and reedy voiced. Tight
articulation, precision dots and slurs, buoyant rhythms, grandly rooted tuttis, breathed
solos, civilised conversazione, making the most of accents and hairpin dynamics, alert
to the smallest detail and agogic.”
“Järvi’s manner and gallantry lit the music at multiple levels ... coaxing every shade
and innuendo from his players, he got the Minuets to dance with an elan and wit
inducing smiles. Significant was his mastery of pauses, both the sounding and silent
kind. Here emotive, there teasing. Taking them to the edge without breaking flow or
tension calls for special refinement not to say elevated skill. “
“(Symphony No.) 104 was the high-spot of the evening. Regal, far-seeking, of the most
perfect grammar. Gloriously turned, resonantly mature. Haydn’s Balkan drones – tonics
and dominants earthing the moment – in full cry, downbeats veering between grace and
vernacular vamping.”

“There is an obvious cohesion between all the musicians, especially in the strings where each of
the five desks has a perfectly homogeneous sound ... A joyful energy governs the musically
well-crafted performance ... this mischievous interpretation captivates us from beginning to
end.”
“Paavo Järvi and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie showed musicality by building intelligently
each piece. The musicians are totally committed to their performance. The harmony stands out
by its accuracy and the solo interventions while the strings play with a rarely seen intensity. And
the timpanist, through his interventions, subtly colors the musical discourse.”
