Paavo in Deutschland
Janelle Gelfand, Cincinnati Enquirer, September 22, 2009
I just stumbled on this intriguing video on the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra Web site, which follows Paavo around Cincinnati, with nice views of Music Hall and extensive views of the Cincinnati city streets, and interviews with him against the Ohio River… there are interviews with dad Neeme Jarvi, brother Kristjan Jarvi, composer Erkki-Sven Tuur… of course, it’s all in German, but Jarvi speaks in English, and the musical backdrop is fabulous (mostly Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, I think). He says, taking on one more orchestra (Paris in 2010) has nothing to do with money. “I like challenges,” he tells the interviewer, who follows him from Germany to Tokyo to Talinn, and we see family shots, too… in this video… Highly recommended!
Jarvi opens the CSO subcription season this Friday in Music Hall with Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks, the Polovtsian Dances, the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and a CSO commission by Tuur. Don’t miss it!
